Shem Systems Corporation has scanned an excerpt of the "History of Hunderdon and Somerset Counties, New Jersey" compiled by James P. Snell and published by Everts & Peck in 1881 which is presently in the public domain.
We scanned the Bridgewater section of this historical work from a volumed named "Somerset County" located at the Bound Brook Public Library and we used Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to get the scanned pages into text format. We read through the text one time and found more errors caused by imperfect OCR technology which we corrected. No doubt we missed other errors and you can email us here if you want to point out any errors to us. Snell's history is a 19th century English work and modern OCR technology seems to work best with 21st century English.
We have been told by people who are knowledgable in historical matters that Archibald Cambell Van Norden Mollison was the individual who put together most of the Bridgewater section of this excerpt that you are about to read. Although not always historically accurate, it is still a fascinating "read" for anyone who is interested in the history of Bound Brook. We decided to include the entire Bridgewater section of Snell's history, since there is so much all over this section which pertains to Bound Brook.
We also took the liberty of breaking up the Bridgewater section into 18 sections. The divisions we created seem logical to us, but they do not exactly correspond to the original text. We had to rename these 18 sections in order to fit them into the 20 character constraint that is characteristic of the all the headings that appear on the right side of this website.
This introductory page was (obviously) written by us. The other links (besides the Introduction) under the Snell heading on the right side of the web page are the actual text. Enjoy!
