VOLUME XV, NUMBER 1
CONSTRUCTION HAS STARTED
The Green Brook Flood Control Commission was formed nearly 30 years ago. It's not surprising that plenty of people felt that actual construction would never happen. But, because of the steady support of the municipalities in the Green Brook Basin, and the counties of Middlesex, Somerset and Union, plus the support of the key officials in Trenton and in Washington, actual construction has begun.
SEEING IS BELIEVING
On the back side of this newsletter, you can see what's happening now at the bridge (the bridge which connects Main Street, Bound Brook Borough with Lincoln Boulevard in Middlesex Borough). A new and higher bridge will be built to make room for the protective levees along the Green Brook. A temporary rented bridge will be in place until the new bridge is finished.
THE NEXT CONSTRUCTION CONTRACT
Even before this first construction contract is completed, the second construction contract is expected to begin in Year 2001 or 2002. The second part of the job will build protective earthen levees along the banks of the Green Brook, at the edge of Billian-Legion Park, and protective works for the properties to the north and east of the Park. It will also include a large pumping station built into the levee to deal with the rainwater which falls inside of the protective levees. When that work is finished, Billian-Legion Park will be restored and once again available for use.
THE THIRD CONSTRUCTION CONTRACT
The third construction contract will follow in a couple of years. banks of the Middle Brook. The final design work for that part of the Project is now underway.
PROTECTIVE LEVEES ALONG THE RARITAN RIVER
The final work to complete protection for the Borough of Bound Brook will be a big construction project. It will provide levees and flood walls between the town of Bound Brook and the Raritan River. This line of protection will link up with other construction to provide protection all around Bound Brook Borough. A big pumping station will be located in the low area, between West Main Street and the Raritan River.
STEP-BY-STEP UP THE BASIN While this final piece of protection for the Borough of Bound Brook is being built, design work will be completed on the next piece of the Project, to protect Middlesex Borough. The overall conceptual design was done several years ago, and approved by Trenton and Washington. The detail design work will flush out that conceptual design, and prepare plans and specifications for construction bidding. The step-by-step detail design and construction process will gradually move up the Green Brook Basin over a period of the next 10 to 12 years. Congress must supply the necessary money each year. (Congress only hands out money one year at a time). But with the continued support of the Municipalities and the three Counties, and our elected officials in Trenton, the Commission is determined to persuade Congress each year that protection for all of the people and property in the Green Brook Basin is vital.
