Walk through a Balloon at the 4th Annual "Step Up For The Arc"
The Arc of Somerset County's Step Up For The Arc, Walk 2006 will be held on Saturday, May 20, 2006 at Duke Island Park in Bridgewater beginning at 9 AM.
This will be the first time the participants will be able to walk through a partially inflated hot air balloon, weather permitting. A Beautiful Balloon (www.balloon-rides.com) is providing this big attraction for children of all ages.
More than 125 people took part in the 2005 ArcWalk. The Arc of Somerset County Walk will start at 9AM on May 20, 2006 at Duke Island Park, located on Old York Road in Bridgewater. The 2006 Step Up For The Arc Honorary Chair is Freeholder Director Ken Scherer.
"I'm proud to be a part of this event," Freeholder Director Scherer said. "It's a great way for friends, neighbors, classmates and families to raise money for people with special needs, and have fun while doing it."
There will be lots of fun, music, food, and entertainment thanks to DJ and entertainer, Ben Auletta, the 4H Clowns, Sparkee of the Somerset Patriots and a few more surprises. The walk is a beautiful stroll through the woods and along the river at Duke Island Park. It is paved, so people with wheelchairs and strollers can easily navigate the course. Once again, the Somerset County Park Commission has made the band shell available.
"The Somerset County Park staff, Bridgewater Township officials, and the Bureau of Fire Inspection, all have been most helpful." explained Bonnie Sovinee, ArcWalk Chair. "Each year we rely on their professionalism to help this event run smoothly."
So far two corporate partners, Dendrite and Lucent, have each agreed to participate with walk teams and their own fundraising websites, linked through www.firstgiving.com/arcwalk2006. The Somerset County Schools will ask friends and families to join them, too.

Step Up For The Arc is the annual statewide Walkathon of The Arc, the state's largest non-profit advocacy and service organization supporting people with mental retardation and their families.
The 4th Annual Walkathon is being presented by The Arc of Somerset County in conjunction with The Arc of New Jersey and all of the local county chapters of The Arc. Last year The Arc of Somerset County raised more than $16,000 for people with developmental disabilities and their families living in Somerset County. In New Jersey conditions considered to be developmental disabilities include mental retardation, autism, cerebral palsy and spina bifida, and these conditions affect 1 in 10 families. The numbers are growing, and public awareness and support is important.
